Maui Transportation
Maui Transportation Options:
-------
[If you are already familiar with transportation on Maui, and merely want some phone numbers, the bottom half of this page is filled with contact info.]
-------
Maui has limited transportation. You have a few choices. You need to decide before you arrive which one is right for you. Renting a car on Maui is generally the best and most economical way to go. There is very little public transportation and taxis can be quite expensive. Getting to and from the airport and transportation around the island can cost you just as much if not more than a simple car rental. If you are just planning to stay around the resort and relax by the pool or beach the bus system might be sufficient.
-------
CAR RENTAL
All the major car rental companies are available at the Kahului airport and in Kaanapali. The airport is roughly about an hour away from the two main tourist areas on the West side of the island.
It is highly recommended that you arrange this before you arrive. Maui has a limited amount of cars and once that supply is depleted there are no other cars to obtain. During peak times the cars will literally sell out and then you will not be able to get a car anywhere. This does happen. The rental price is directly determined by the demand. During Christmas season a small compact car that normally rents for $39 can go for as much as $139. When the supply gets lower the prices get higher. Whatever the market will bear.
-------
SHUTTLES
There are only 2 share shuttle-companies. Speedi Shuttle 808-242-7777. and Excecutive Shuttle 808-669-3200. Both will pick you up at the airport and drive you to your hotel or resort along with others going in your same direction. This tends to be a much cheaper way than taking a taxi.
-------
TAXIS
Taxis are readily available and are regulated by meter. For example at this time, a trip from the airport to Kaanapali is roughly around $90 to $100 depending on the traffic. Plenty of taxis are available to take you to and from destinations. If you are going 5 miles or more it will cost you at least $20 each way.
-------
CHAUFFEURED CARS AND LIMOUSINES
There are a number of private car and Limo rental companies with a fleet of chauffeured vehicles. Luxurious limousines, sedans, SUV's or passenger vans will transport you to your hotel in style and comfort. These will of course be more expensive but you will be paying for privacy, exclusivity and expedience. They will arrange to pick you up at the Airport most times at the baggage claim. They will take your party to your accommodations in luxury and style. Prices vary. Expect to pay anywhere from $205 for a sedan to Wailea and $215 to Kaanapali. Limos run roughly around $269 for Wailea and $285 to Kaanapali. Airport return is slightly less because they do not charge airport tax. You can also arrange a Limo for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. Most companies have a minimum of 2 hrs and sometimes include the gratuity. prices roughly ranging around $100 an hour for sedans and $135 per hour for Limousines. SUV;s and other private cars are available as well. Check with each company they all have different regulations and fees.
-------
BUSES
Once you do arrive at your resort there are only a few bus options. Public transportation is sparse. Maui is very rural. It does not have as comprehensive of a bus system that you might find in a more suburban area like in Honolulu and Waikiki. This may present a bit of a hassle and you might be subject to timetables that may not be convenient for you.
There are public bus services on Maui operating from the Kahului Airport to South Maui and West Maui, between South Maui and West Maui, and within the resort developments of Kaanapali and Wailea.
THE WEST MAUI SHOPPING EXPRESS
Runs two routes, both from Lahaina, one to Kaanapali and the other to Kapalua. Stops include, the Wharf Cinema Center and Hilo Hatties, in Lahaina, the Lahaina Cannery Mall , Whalers Village in Kaanapali, and. the hotels in Kaanapali, and Kapalua. Buses run every hour or so from mid-morning until mid-evening for a fee of $1 each way.
THE KAANAPALI TROLLEY
A complimentary open air trolley that runs throughout the Kaanapali resort between the hotels, golf course, Fairway shops and Whalers Village
THE SOUTH MAUI SHOPPING EXPRESS
Makes three shopping runs each day from hotels and condos in Makena, Wailea, and Kihei to Whaler's Village in Kaanapali. The fee is $15 one-way for adults, $5 one-way for kids, The return trip is free with a receipt from one of the shops or restaurants.
THE WAILEA SHUTTLE
A complimentary shuttle that stops at all major hotels and condos, the Wailea Shopping Village, and golf and tennis courts in Wailea about every 20-30 minutes from 6:30am-8:30pm
There is also a bus to get to and from the Maui Ocean Center from either Whalers Village in Kaanapali or the hotels and condos in the Kihei/Wailea area.
Ask your hotel concierge for exact prices and schedules.
-------
MOTORCYCLES
You must be at least 21 years old, have a valid motorcycle license, and a major credit card to rent a motorcycle. There are no helmet laws in Maui but helmets are available and they are strongly suggested. Harley rentals are available on Maui.
-------
BIKES AND MOPED RENTAL
Bike and moped rentals are alternative modes of transportation, but Maui is not the best island for these because the roads are few, narrow, crowded, and dangerous.
