BIG ISLAND
Big Island is the commonly-used name for the largest Hawaiian island, and is so-called Big Island because the actual name of this island is Hawaii -- which is confusing, because that's the same as the name for all the islands as a group, Hawaii. Big Island [Hawaii] is one of the six major tourist destination islands of Hawaii. Big Island has a very high central mountain range which divides its climates into two different types. Big Island’s main tourist areas are on the west side of the mountain range, shielded from the numerous winter storms that come from the northeast, resulting in perfect sunny weather in the oceanside town of Kona. Big Island’s historically inhabited areas are on the east side of the mountain, and face into the numerous winter storms that come from the northeast, resulting in a lush green tropical paradise covering the northeast side of the island, around the town of Hilo. You can fly on a side trip to Big Island from Maui to see red-hot lava flowing from the only active volcano in Hawaii. --------
