Activities for Kids

Family Activities for Kids are numerous on Maui.

You will hear locals refer to kids as "keikis", the Hawaiian word for children.

Maui is a paradise for keikis as well as adults, with warm weather and sunshine for outdoor activities for kids, and a beach to play on.

Many beaches dot the coastline. Some are calm and protected -- perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Other have waves more appropriate for boogie boarding, body surfing or surfing. A few county beaches have lifeguards on duty, but most resort areas beaches do not.

Most resorts have pools. Some are more elaborate than others. Some have special areas designated for smaller children, with pirate ships or sand beaches or various different structures to play on. Many have slides for children and adults alike.

Most of the big resort hotels each have a kids' program to look after children so their parents can go on adult activities. Most kids' programs are regulated by the state, and are for children ages 5-12. Ask if your hotel has a kids' program.

There are lots of kids programs offered throughout the year. Some programs are offered especially during school holidays.

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK

Kids can join the Junior Ranger program. They can earn their Junior Ranger badge while learning and exploring the wonders of Haleakala national park.

OCEAN DISCOVERY CAMP

Send the kids to Ocean Discovery Camp run by The Pacific Whale Foundation. The camp is geared towards children from grades one through six. There they will learn fun skills from the marine education team of the Whale Foundation. Offered during winter holidays Dec 20-31, during spring school break, and in summer starting May 31. You can sign up for single days, multiple days or an entire week. Check with Pacific Whale Foundation for the particulars.

A lot of activities for kids are appropriate for all ages. Certain activities do stipulate age requirements. Most activities have discounted prices for children under 12 and some even offer teen prices. When booking activities you will want to check for any restrictions, and then of course consider whatever you feel would be appropriate for your child.

Of all the activities offered on Maui, these activities are popular things with kids:

THE SUGAR CANE TRAIN

A real steam train that was used long ago to transport sugar cane. More appropriate for smaller children as the focus is on the train and the singing conductor. Not really a sightseeing tour as the train just goes alongside the highway, although the views of ocean and mountains are spectacular. Adults will enjoy the excitement of the children as they enjoy the experience of a real train.

THE AQUARIUM

A visit to a living reef at the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium is a great way to explore the vibrant exhibits teeming with colorful marine life and live coral found only in Hawaii.

SUBMARINE

Dive down over 100 feet to the ocean floor to view a live reef and a sunken ship. Like scuba diving without getting wet. Children ages 3 and up, or over 48 inches tall, are allowed.

GLASS-BOTTOM BOAT

For those too small to go on the submarine or for those with shorter attention spans, the glass-bottom boat offers an experience similar to snorkeling, but without getting wet. Offering 1 hour trips to cruise the Lahaina coastline, viewing just under the surface of the ocean. You can also go out above deck to take a breath of fresh air and view the coastline.
